What to Look for When Buying a Dog

Many people when looking to buy a dog think that buying from a breeder is the best way. In some ways, this is true, although unless you know which questions to ask and what to look for, you could end up with a sick puppy who could be plagued with illness or behaviour problems for their entire life.

If you’re looking to buy a pedigree dog, then you should research reputable breeders on sites such as the Kennel Club. A breeder with a good reputation for healthy and happy puppies will normally have a waiting list but it’ll be worth the wait!

When buying a dog, there are certain things to look out for. You should check whether the puppy’s eyes, ears and bottom are clear. If the puppy seems ill, then return another day, if he is still ill, then you should get your puppy from another breeder. It is important to find out about the mother and see the mother and puppies together. Seeing the mother will give you an idea of her temperament and subsequently that of her pups.

Puppies should be weaned by seven weeks old, and should not leave their mother until after this has happened, although many breeders will not sell the puppies until they reach 12 weeks. Reputable breeders will be happy to answer any questions and provide all the necessary documentation. If you’re suspicious about the breeder, think that the puppies have been neglected or there are signs of cruelty then you should contact your local authority.
