The Link between Pet Nutrition and Skin Condition

If you have noticed that your dog’s coat is not looking as shiny as it used to, the problem may well be down to poor pet nutrition. There are a number of possible reasons why the skin and coat of any dog may become less healthy and, if you want a proper diagnosis and the reassurance that it is not down to a dermatological or internal disease, you should consult your vet; however, in most cases, such problems are caused by what a dog is, or isn’t, eating.

Diet outstrips all other factors as the most influential contributor to skin and coat condition. The skin is by far the largest organ in the body and just as internal organs are affected by bad eating habits, so is the skin. When choosing a pet food for your dog, meat should always be the first listed ingredient. Opting for a high quality food, rich in protein (the food group that constitutes around 95% of fur), is one of the best ways to ensure a healthy coat for your pet.

The sheen of a dog’s coat will be also down to the natural oils present in the skin. If you have noticed their fur is duller and drier than usual, you could supplement any lack of natural oils by adding some coconut oil to your dog’s meals, the healthy fats in which will soon brighten up his coat. In order not to affect your dog’s cholesterol, be sure to use virgin coconut oil that has not been processed, to ensure the supplement will have only a positive impact on your pet’s coat and overall health.
