How Long Does Tattoo Removal Take?
One of the questions we get asked most is how long each session takes. The answer, although maybe not what you what to hear, is that it depends. There are a few factors we need to take into account, so a more specific timescale can be given once we see the tattoo. A session can last a few minutes or take closer to an hour. In some cases, this might be all you need, whereas, for other people, further sessions will be required to ensure it has completely disappeared.
Why Does It Vary So Much?
The first thing we take into account is the size of the tattoo. A large piece will take longer to remove, both in terms of how long a session lasts and the number of sessions you will need. Of course, after the treatment, we also need to clean and dress the area to ensure it is given the perfect healing conditions.
A Rough Guide
- Tattoo size 2.5 cm: 2 mins
- Tattoo size 5 cm: 5 mins
- Tattoos size 10 cm: 10-15 mins
- Tattoo size 15 cm: 20-40 mins
- Tattoo size over 15 cm: 40-60 mins
However, if you have a very large tattoo, we will need to split the lessons because there is an element of swelling which needs to be managed to ensure healing and pain management for you.
Does Colour Make A Difference?
Yes, there is no doubt that colour plays a factor in removing a tattoo. The darker tattoos are the fastest to remove, but they may also blister more which means we need to break the treatments down to make them bearable for you. A lighter tattoo can potentially be removed in a single sitting, but it will be a more extended session than the darker inks. The colours themselves also make a difference. Dark colours, black, brown, green, and blue are easier to remove, but when combined into a multicoloured artwork, you will be looking at a longer removal time. The most complex colours to remove are orange, red and yellow.
Where Is It?
Finally, we need to consider the location of the tattoo in order to plan the length of the session. Under arms, breasts, and pubic areas are naturally more sensitive, which means we take things a lot slower, so your recovery time between sessions is not too painful.
