When we hurt ourselves we can tell someone, usually a doctor, and get the medical problem hopefully rectified. However, animals, whilst they hurt themselves just like humans, are not able to communicate their pain in quite the same way.
This is one of the reasons why vets are so important. Whilst you might think you know a lot about your animal only a trained vet will have all the adequate training to identify and rectify health issues. Sure you might have an instinct that something is wrong with your pet; however fixing a problem is quite another matter.Hopefully you won’t see your vet all that often because your pet lives out a very healthy and happy life. Sadly, this isn’t always the case and many owners spend a lot of time with their vets, especially when their pets are older and more vulnerable to certain health conditions such as arthritis.
In fact, even healthy pets will have some ongoing relationship with their vets. They might go to their vets to get vaccinated or spayed or neutered, which can have various positive health implications – such as minimising the risk of certain cancers like cervical cancer. The point is that all pets benefit from a good vets. Of course all vets that are allowed to be vets are likely to be high quality and very professional; however you might still want to be a little discerning about the veterinarian that you choose.
One of the most important factors that you need to think about is something relatively simple: geographical location. How close is the vets to your home location? This might be important as in a medical emergency you don’t want a lengthy drive to contend with, especially if your pet doesn’t like riding in a car.Whilst sometimes going to the vets might be a big expensive, unless you have pet insurance, it’s important to recognise that vets are vets because they love what they do, regardless of what they earn. You will hopefully have a good personal relationship with your vet and they should take an active interest in your animal’s welfare.
As trained professionals vets understand pet care very intimately. Therefore you should be able to ask your vet various questions even if they aren’t specifically related to your pets wellbeing. In other words, your vet should care.Whilst good vets are a joy to visit of course a healthy animal is the main aim. With this in mind, you need to think very carefully about pet food and pet nutrition. You might consider choosing food that is specially formulated perhaps to target specific medical conditions or the particular size or breed of your pet.
