Knowing How Often to Feed a Dog

For the vast majority of healthy adult dogs, the number and frequency of meals is not overly important. Indeed, once an owner has succeeded in establishing a suitable feeding amount, they can pretty much divide it up into as many meals as they want and feed their pets at times to suit. This being said, most dog owners typically aim to feed their animals around 1-3 meals per day.

Most dog owners prefer to free feed. This basically means leaving pet food in the bowl and letting the dog choose when they want to eat and how much they feel like wolfing donate free feeding can work well with a great many dogs, owners would do well to ensure they always measure out the recommended amount at the start of the day and top up the bowl from that i.e. Once it’s gone – it’s gone! This is very important as it helps to avoid overfeeding and also prevents animals from becoming fussy.

However, there are some exceptions to this. For example, a dog that becomes hungry very easily should ideally be fed several small meals a day as this will ensure its stomach isn’t left empty for long periods. Meanwhile, a dog that goes to the toilet in the house at night is likely to benefit from having morning or early afternoon meals as this will help to make sure the food has time to work its way through before bed time.
