A top Chinese diplomat has warned that if Huawei were to be banned from Britain’s 5G network, there could be “substantial” repercussions for the country’s investments in the UK. Chen Wen reported in a statement that Beijing had already “witnessed some conscious moves” in that direction.
Huawei was recently put on the list by US which curbs the ability of US firms to trade with the brand. National security concerns were blamed over Huawei Technology by US officials. Reports suggest that UK may allow Huawei to supply “non-core” 5G components, such as antenna masts, while it is still reviewing its 5G telecoms policy. Huawei is considered a world-leading provider of next-gen 5G technology in providing superfast mobile internet connections.
Ms. Chen said the UK economy would be damaged by any ban on Huawei sent out to international and Chinese companies. She is the Chinese charge d’affaires in London. She said, “The message is not going to be very positive.” When asked how large the after effects would be, the embassy officials found it hard to predict, but were of the opinion that it’s going to be quite substantial. Ms. Chen insisted that her government would never force a Chinese firm operating abroad to provide information to its intelligence agencies. She also went on to claim that there was a bit of “hysteria” in the states about the rising influence of the Chinese companies and the UK should make decisions based on its own national interest.
Huawei’s investment in the UK is “a vote of confidence in the UK economy” said Ms. Chen.
